Urban Empire is the product of my graphic design 2 class, in which we were asked to create a social campaign for a certain need in society. We were first tasked with designing three posters for the campaign, then with expanding the campaign in any way we saw fit.
I chose to call attention to the need for more public art by creating a series of magazines, under the name Urban Empire. I used mixed media collaging to capture the essence of the urban experience: bright, layered, crammed, energetic, and full of life.
These posters each represent different benefits of having public art in urban spaces.
This first magazine is on the topic of travel. I felt it was important to include places around the world where public art is strong, making the magazine act as a sort of travel guide. It also includes Christo and his wife's works around the world, sticking to the theme of travel while giving a more specific example of large-scale installations.
This second magazine edition is about gardening as an art form, especially in urban spaces. For people living in cities like New York, green space is hard to come by. I wanted to include an article talking about gardening in tight spaces and emphasize the fact that gardening is an art form too!
For the third edition, I only designed a cover. This cover is meant to encapsulate different vibes of different cities and the evolution of architecture throughout history. A perfect example for a city with lots of layers and ancient history is Rome, where they have continuously built on top of previous structures to create the tiramisu (get it, layering??) of a city that it is today.
